The Philadelphia Eagles shook up the 2020 NFL Draft when they used a second-round pick on Jalen Hurts to help solidify the backup quarterback position for years to come. Initial reaction to the Hurts selection varied, with some suggesting the Carson Wentz era was on life support.
That clearly isn’t the case and after listening to head coach Doug Pederson, It appears Hurts will start out as the third quarterback on the depth chart.
Eagles head coach Doug Pederson sat down with Angelo Cataldi and the 94 WIP Morning Team on Friday morning and said this in regards to getting quarterback Jalen Hurts ready to play, despite a limited amount of reps in training camp.
“It is probably a little more difficult with the quarterback position because with Carson (Wentz) and Nate (Sudfeld), making sure these two guys get the reps they need,” Pederson said. “You have to make sure Jalen is comfortable with the playbook and understands what we are doing as an offense, so the evaluation process might take a little bit longer with the quarterback, but we are going to do everything we can to make sure all of our guys are prepared. Jalen is no different.”
The Eagles have openly supported Sudfeld and with the season opener less than a month away and the team going through a reduced version of training camp, his knowledge of the playbook is a clear advantage and the reason he’ll be the backup in Week 1.
