The NASCAR Cup Series returns to Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday for the series’ first superspeedway race since Ryan Newman’s terrifying accident at the Daytona 500, and NASCAR is taking action to make the racing safer at one of the fastest tracks on the calendar.
There is a new rules package for Sunday’s race, with several changes made to reduce the horsepower of the cars and slow down the race. Aero ducts have been eliminated, which NASCAR says could eliminate tandem drafting, and a reduction of the size of the throttle body, which will slow cars, along with other changes focusing on the safety of the car during an incident. With no practice or qualifying sessions before the race, drivers won’t really know how the car feels under the new specifications until the green flag drops.
Martin Truex Jr. will start from the pole on Sunday, ahead of Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch. You can see the entire starting lineup here.
The 2020 GEICO 500 will begin at 3:00 p.m. ET on FOX.
