NASCAR ‘unlikely’ to change practice, qualifying format for 2025 season

NASCAR is reportedly “unlikely” to change the practice and qualifying format for the 2025 Cup Series season.

On Thursday afternoon, NASCAR officially revealed the new schedules for the 2025 season. There are several significant changes, such as NASCAR’s first points race in Mexico City. However, could there be changes to practice and qualifying as well? According to NASCAR, the Cup Series probably won’t have an altered format in 2025.

According to FOX Sports’ Bob Pockrass, NASCAR says the practice and qualifying format in the Cup Series likely won’t change for the 2025 season. Currently, the Cup Series has two groups for practice and qualifying and an even more complicated method to determine the starting lineup. The Xfinity and Truck Series have a classic one-round shootout with single-lap runs.

NASCAR’s qualifying format in the Cup Series is unnecessary and complicated. There have been tweaks over the last few years, with a recent update over the previous few months. Unless NASCAR changes its mind about the practice and qualifying format, the Cup Series will likely have the same method in 2025.
