Late Sunday night, NASCAR announced that a noose was found in Darrell “Bubba” Wallace Jr. and the No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports team’s garage stall at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama. NASCAR said it’s “angry and outraged,” and it immediately opened an investigation to find who did it “and eliminate them from the sport.”
The Cup Series’ GEICO 500 was scheduled for Sunday afternoon, but rain forced the race to be postponed until Monday (3 p.m. ET, FOX).
Minutes after NASCAR broke the news, Wallace reacted with his own message on Twitter. Calling it a “despicable act of racism and hatred,” the 26-year-old No. 43 Chevrolet driver said he was “incredibly saddened” but refuses to be silenced as he helps lead NASCAR’s recent commitment to fighting racism.
“Nothing is more important and we will not be deterred by the reprehensible actions of those who seek to spread hate,” Wallace wrote, in part. “As my mother told me today, ‘They are just trying to scare you.’ This will not break me, I will not give in nor will I back down. I will continue to proudly stand for what I believe in.”
As people on Twitter reacted with similar outrage and horror, the NASCAR and general sports world are standing with Wallace, and people ranging from Dale Earnhardt Jr. to LeBron James to Billie Jean King, athletes and fans are sharing their support for him, including unquestionably rooting for him to win Monday’s rain-delayed GEICO 500.
Sickening! @BubbaWallace my brother! Know you donโt stand alone! Iโm right here with you as well as every other athlete. I just want to continue to say how proud I am of you for continuing to take a stand for change here in America and sports! @NASCAR I salute you as well! ๐๐พโ๐พ๐ https://t.co/1TwkjVHai5

Hope Bubba wins it tomorrow.

This is a heinous act that demonstrates exactly how much work is ahead of us in the fight against racism.
Wallace is the only full-time Black driver in NASCARโs elite Cup Series & pushed for #NASCAR to ban the Confederate flag. https://t.co/9o81vH34Vq

This is disgusting and appalling. Thereโs cameras everywhere in the garage, I pray they caught this person/people on them. If not then somebody knows who did this, be a man and speak up. Go out there and stomp on that loud pedal as hard as you can today @BubbaWallace. https://t.co/tUtBRtaMYC

Just disgusting. Imagine how small & self-loathing whoever did this must feel – and to be so cowardly that they don't even own up to it.
@BubbaWallace on your worst day you're 10X the man this person is. Keep the hammer down and bring it, you got my full support FWIW.

Real @nascar fans, like me, are furious. You don't come in and mess with a member of our FAMILY and get away with it. NASCAR has been evolving for decades and continues to do so. They will get to the bottom of this and take appropriate measures. #IStandWithBubba https://t.co/tuyr5JTphA
