First, there were 16 drivers competing in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. Then the field shrank down to 12, and now, after Sunday’s race at Charlotte Motor Speedway’s Roval, there are just eight remaining title contenders.
Going into the Round of 8, the remaining playoff drivers are: Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson, Martin Truex Jr., Ryan Blaney, Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott, Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano. Larson — who won his seventh race of the season at Charlotte on Sunday — is currently at the top of the playoff standings.
The three races in this next round are at Texas Motor Speedway, Kansas Speedway and Martinsville Speedway. And after the last race, the playoff field will be cut in half as the final Championship 4 drivers will compete in a winner-take-all title race at Phoenix Raceway on November 7.
