NASCAR’s schedule in the Cup Series is always a hot topic of conversation. Normally, it is about where the events are within the 38 race weekends. However, could NASCAR expand the 38-race Cup Series schedule as the new TV deal is nearing an announcement sooner rather than later? Don’t count on it.
According to NASCAR President Steve Phelps, the sport will have a total of 38 races on the Cup Series schedule for the foreseeable future. Phelps believes the Cup Series season is long enough and that he doesn’t foresee any expansion. The NASCAR president didn’t mention anything about shortening the number of weekends, only the races.
Overall, this is a smart decision as NASCAR arguably has the most intense season of any sport. The Cup Series competes on 38 weekends, which leaves only 14 weekends off per year. It is one of the shortest offseasons in American sports and doesn’t need to be any shorter. For now, NASCAR will continue with its current structure unless any changes might be necessary.
