NASCAR addresses decision to grant Kyle Larson a waiver in 2024

NASCAR addresses the decision to grant Kyle Larson a waiver for the 2024 playoffs. Find out what NASCAR said about the decision!

[autotag]Kyle Larson[/autotag] has been waiting over one week for NASCAR to decide his eligibility for the 2024 Cup Series playoffs. Larson attempted “The Double” on May 26, but the weather forced him to start the Indianapolis 500 over the Coca-Cola 600. On Tuesday, NASCAR finally announced that the 2021 Cup Series champion will receive a waiver.

Following the announcement, NASCAR Senior Vice President of Competition Elton Sawyer talked on Zoom to reporters and discussed the process of granting Larson a waiver for missing the start of the 2024 Coca-Cola 600.

“We ultimately landed at giving [Kyle Larson] a waiver,” Sawyer said. “Essentially our decision-making was, although we had the inclement weather in Indianapolis as well as Charlotte, Kyle made every attempt to get to Charlotte. He was standing in the pit box with his helmet on ready to go. Unfortunately, we had weather in Charlotte as well and were unfortunately not able to get the race going again. That’s how we landed on our decision.”

NASCAR made the right decision to give Larson a waiver because otherwise, the storyline would’ve been negative the entire year. Plus, this was a special circumstance, as NASCAR encourages “The Double” as the Indianapolis 500 is the biggest racing event of the season. It may have taken longer than anticipated, but Larson will fight for a title in 2024.
