Michigan State football held its first scrimmage of spring ball on Saturday, with head coach Mel Tucker calling it “very competitive and physical.”
The Spartans wrapped up their second week of spring practice on Saturday with an intrasquad scrimmage at the Duffy Daugherty building on campus. Michigan State released a press release on Saturday afternoon with comments from Tucker.
“I thought it was a very competitive and physical scrimmage, all the way from start to finish,” Tucker said in the press release. “When you scrimmage, you have more plays in a row than you would in a normal practice. I wanted to see guys play harder for longer, and I saw that. I saw guys really straining and competing on both sides of the ball. ”

Additionally, Tucker said he was impressed with the run game — both offensively and defensively — and that all of the quarterbacks got in some work in the scrimmage.

In the past under former head coach Mark Dantonio, stats were released from spring and fall scrimmages but that was not the case here. It’s clear from last fall and so far this spring that Tucker isn’t going to ever reveal much that is happening during closed practices.
The Spartans return to the field on Tuesday for what will be their seventh practice of the spring. Michigan State has three more weeks of practice this month, and will wrap up spring ball on April 24 with their annual spring game.
