Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is a new mobile RPG coming next year

NetherRealm Studios is apparently “pushing the boundaries of Mortal Kombat” with Onslaught.

A brand-new Mortal Kombat is in the works, and it’s coming out relatively soon.

On Tuesday, NetherRealm Studios announced Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, a mobile RPG that’ll arrive sometime in 2023. It’ll emphasize cinematic storytelling and let players put together teams of fighters for massive real-time brawls. Outside of these light details, there’s no other information on Mortal Kombat: Onslaught thus far.

“We are pushing the boundaries of Mortal Kombat to allow players to experience the franchise in new ways, while still staying true to its core visceral nature,” Ed Boon, CCO of NetherRealm Studios, said in a press release. “With Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, we reimagined Mortal Kombat into a strategic team-based collection RPG with fast-paced, group melee combat that both new and existing fans can enjoy.”

No firm release date for Mortal Kombat: Onslaught yet, but anyone eager to hear more can sign up on the game’s website. There’s also some artwork that you can check out below.

It’s been a few years since Mortal Kombat 11, the last mainline entry, came out. Some fans were hoping for a fully-fledged console and PC title, but they’ll have to keep waiting.

Outside the realm of video games, Warner Bros. is making another Mortal Kombat movie. Many consider the 2021 film as an all-time great adaptation. The same can’t be said for Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, which effectively killed the late 1990s live-action big screen series.
