The Tampa Bay Buccaneers brought back a familiar face in free agency earlier this week, signing safety Jordan Whitehead to a two-year contract.
Whitehead spent the last two years with the New York Jets, but was a fourth-round pick by the Bucs back in 2018, and spent the first four seasons of his NFL career in Tampa Bay, helping the Bucs win a Super Bowl in 2020.
Teaming up with All-Pro Antoine Winfield Jr. once again, Whitehead should be a huge upgrade for the Bucs at their other safety spot, and we now have more details on the structure of his new contract with Tampa Bay (via Bucs Gameday’s JC Allen):
Jordan Whiteheads 2 yr $9m deal is essentially a 1 yr deal with an option. He’ll count $4.5m against the cap this yr guaranteed. There’s a 750k option bonus to be paid on the 5th day of the new league yr. #Bucs could walk away in 2025 with no dead money & a savings of $4.5m

That’s a low-risk deal for the Bucs, as they can move on after this season without having any dead money on the books.
Hopefully though, Whitehead makes enough of a positive impact to where the Bucs will be willing to pay out the second year of his deal and view it as a bargain.
