One of the primary projections for 2021 NFL mock drafts and the Detroit Lions selection at No. 7 overall has been Alabama wide receiver De’Vonta Smith. But the Heisman Trophy winner isn’t the only Crimson Tide wideout drawing attention inside the top 10.
In the latest first-round projection from USA TODAY’s Nate Davis, Smith’s teammate, Jaylen Waddle, gets the nod to the WR-needy Lions with the seventh pick.
“Waddle seems better suited to that role than slightly built Crimson Tide teammate DeVonta Smith – and Detroit could desperately need help with Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones unsigned,” Davis notes in his explanation for the pick.
There is a wild trade scenario in this mock that features the Texans sending Deshaun Watson to the New York Jets and the No. 2 overall pick going to Houston. Three QBs, OT Penei Sewell, WR JaMarr Chase and LB Micah Parsons are off the board when Detroit picks in this scenario.
