Indianapolis Colts tight end Mo Alie-Cox was in a similar situation to Jacksonville Jaguars’ new tight end Tim Tebow when the former signed on with the team in 2017.
Alie-Cox, who was a standout basketball player at VCU, hadn’t played football since his freshman year of high school. Now, he’s holding a strong role in the Colts offense with clear upside to be a key player on the roster.
Tebow, who is returning to football as a tight end, has a massive learning curve to endure. Alie-Cox gave him some advice via TMZ on Saturday.
“The tight end position, you have to learn how to block,” Alie-Cox said. “You have to catch passes. The protection — the little things like that. So, it’s a lot that goes into it. It’s a lot of mental.”
Tebow hasn’t played in the NFL for nine years. Many believe it’s a long shot that he will make the Jaguars roster even with how thin they are at the tight end position. Then again, no one in their right mind thought Tebow would try to make a comeback even three months ago, so anything can happen.
Running back Nyheim Hines gave his thoughts on Tebow’s return earlier this offseason, and Alie-Cox believes it’s a possibility he makes the roster for the Jaguars.
“He hasn’t played the position but I mean, he’s a hard worker,” Alie-Cox said. “You can’t put anything past Tim Tebow. I think he’s got it.”
When asked who will finish with more catches on the season, Alie-Cox had a quick answer.
“I would like to go with myself, for sure,” Alie-Cox said with a laugh.
This is a big year for Alie-Cox, who would lead the tight end room in targets, and it will be interesting to see how that development takes place down in Jacksonville.
