MLB’s bigger bases, explained: Why they might increase stolen bases and help with safety

We explain why there are bigger bases in MLB.

If you’re here, maybe you’re watching an MLB game and heard announcers talking about the bigger bases, with rule changes that were made ahead of the 2023 season.

You might be wondering: Why bigger bases? And what’s the big deal about them?

We’re here to help.

First of all: Bases have gone from having an area of 15 square inches to 18 (that doesn’t include home plate).

Second: The why is important. It’s partially because of player safety — bigger bases mean that runners won’t have the chance for as much contact with a fielder.

And in the attempt to increase the amount of action on the field — see the shift ban — the hope is there will be more stolen base attempts. Why? Because it’s a little shorter of a distance to run than it was before, and bigger bases mean you could keep your foot on the bag better as you slide in.

There you have it!
