Mitchell Trubisky says lack of details, health were offense’s major issues in 2019

When looking at what exactly went wrong with Chicago’s offense last year, you can’t point to one single thing.

There weren’t many bright spots on the Bears offense last season. They were among the bottom four teams in points per game and yards per game, and it was about as ugly as it could get.

But when looking at what exactly went wrong with Chicago’s offense last year, you can’t point to one single thing. Multiple factors contributed to their struggles, including inconsistent quarterback play, lack of a run game, a struggling offensive line, lack of tight end contribution and questionable play calling.

Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky said when it came down the offense’s struggles, it was health and a lack of details that were the unit’s biggest issues in 2019.

Chicago suffered some injuries on the offensive line with right guard Kyle Long and right tackle Bobby Massie, at receiver with Taylor Gabriel, as well as lost their top three tight ends to injured reserve.

While injuries certainly hurt the Bears, ultimately it was the lack of details and execution of the offensive gameplan that made for one of the worst offenses in the NFL last season.

“We’ve just got to be more detailed,” Trubisky told reporters Friday. “We’ve got to be more locked into our game plans week-in, week-out. Everybody’s got to be on the same page and when we get to Sunday, it’s got to all be about execution. I felt like we lacked details overall on offense, myself included. If we’re on top of those this year and we just hold each other accountable to the standard we know we’re capable of, then we’ll have a lot more success and win more games.

“We definitely have the talent. I think it just comes down to being disciplined, playing smart football and everybody doing their jobs to perfection. Those are two of the main focuses that I came away with looking at last year.”

Considering how bad Chicago’s offense was last year, there’s plenty of room for improvement in 2020. Whether Trubisky will be the quarterback leading the offense in its quest for redemption remains to be seen.
