Mississippi State cornerback DeCarlos Nicholson commits to USC

The Starkville to Los Angeles pipeline is busy.

The USC Trojans have landed a second transfer portal pickup from Mississippi State in a 24-hour period. Shortly after bringing in Jo’Quavious “Woody” Marks at running back, the Trojans claimed cornerback DeCarlos Nicholson from the Bulldogs as well. The Starkville-to-Los Angeles pipeline was very busy.

USC’s secondary, as you all know, greatly underperformed in 2023. The Trojans just lost Domani Jackson in the transfer portal. They need depth and they need reinforcements for new secondary coach Doug Belk, who has effectively replaced ace recruiter Donte Williams on the USC staff. It’s less about Nicholson being the main answer to USC’s problems; the value of this story is that USC has more options, more pieces, for Belk to work with. USC needs to continue to fill the room and give Belk more players he can teach on the practice field in the spring, giving the Trojans better odds of having a defense which is sufficiently prepared for the 2024 season, beginning with that huge opener against LSU in Las Vegas.
