Tiger Woods’ quest to make golf history once again began this week at TPC Boston.

The 15-time major champion teed it up on Thursday morning in the first round of the Northern Trust, the first of three events in the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Last year Rory McIlroy joined Woods to become just the second two-time winner of the PGA Tour’s season-ending playoff event. Woods won the inaugural FedEx Cup title in 2007 and again in 2009.

The 82-time winner on Tour played alongside Dylan Frittelli and Matthew Fitzpatrick, starting off the 10th tee. Check out Woods’ opening-round 68 shot-by-shot below.

Hole 9 – Par 4

Tiger missed this one well right and he runs after it to see where it lands. His lie wasn’t too bad from the thick rough, leaving 200-some yards to the pin. It came out real soft and doesn’t carry to the green, flirting with a bunker. He stayed out of the trap but was in a thick bit of grass and did well to just get this on the green a respectable distance away. Tiger had 16 feet for par and just missed. Bogey. Awful finish to a great round.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3-under 68.

Hole 8 – Par 3

GET IN THE HOLE!

Tiger flagged this one on the final par 3 of the day, curling his ball to the back-left pin and leaving it just six feet short for another birdie chance. Chirp-chirp! That’s a pair of consecutive birdies on the front nine for Tiger.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 4-under thru 17.

Hole 7 – Par 5

Another left-rough miss off the tee from the Big Cat. Bummer. He muscled a fairway wood up close to the green, leaving a 40-yard pitch shot from the fairway to the front-right pin. He wanted it closer but he’s only got six feet left for a birdie. Cans it (duh) and we’re making a late move, people!

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3-under thru 16.

Hole 6 – Par 4

I mean, this hole was about as boring as could possibly be. Left rough off the tee. Middle of the green approach. Two-putt par from 51 feet. Lather, rinse, repeat like most of his round today.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2-under thru 15.

Hole 5 – Par 4

Well, this isn’t great. Tiger’s swing looked pretty nice but goes a little too far left and finds a fairway bunker. Tiger dropped his club after his follow through, so you know the approach was poor. He blew this one right of the green BUT the lie is pretty clean and he’s got plenty of green to work with. You and I would be thrilled with his shot that released to five feet, but you can tell he wanted more by his reaction. Even the broadcast thought he could’ve gotten it closer. Great scramble to get up-and-down for par. Really great.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2-under thru 14.

Hole 4 – Par 4

Driveable par 4 and Tiger went for it. Instead he’s on the beach, driving his ball right into the face of the bunker that guards the green. Gotta love the aggressive approach, just didn’t quite get it there. Lengthy bunker shot and Tiger makes it look like he was playing from the fairway. Flops this one up on the green and lets it come to rest right around five feet from the pin. This guy is so good. Chirp-chirp! No doubt about this one. Back-to-back birdies.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2-under thru 13.

Hole 3 – Par 3

Tiger’s licking his chops after this tasty shot to the par-3 third, leaving a 16 footer for birdie. BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE (what happened to that guy, by the way?). Tiger buries the putt and gets under par for the first time today. Only a matter of time until he rolled one in.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1-under thru 12.

Hole 2 – Par 5

Blew this one right off the tee, finding the fairway bunker I do believe. Hate to see it after he played the par-5 18th perfectly just two holes ago. Second shot was a lay up down the fairway, and from there he sticks his approach about 10 feet past the hole, setting up a great look at birdie to keep the momentum rolling. He’s putting with confidence and really attacking the cup on the greens, but this one misses and leaves a three-footer for par. Converts. Next.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 11.

Hole 1 – Par 4

Another fairway here for Tiger – using less than driver – on the short par 4. He’s got just 132 yards to the pin from the short stuff and throws this one to the middle of the green. That’s another putt from just outside 20 feet for birdie. In a change of pace (see what I did there?) Tiger leaves this one short. No harm, par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 10.

Hole 18 – Par 5

The lone par 5 on the back is here at the 18th and Tiger hit this one on the absolute screws. Perfect shot, straight down the fairway. Oh yeah, this was saucy. Tiger puts the marinara on the pasta with a b-e-a-utiful approach to the middle of the green. One par 5, one eagle putt awaits. Tiger’s eye is all over these greens, just still can’t get the pace. Gave this one a great roll but just misses the edge, leaving a few feet for his first birdie of the round.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 9.

Hole 17 – Par 4

Another fairway found for Tiger. He’s swinging off the tee with supreme confidence this morning. From the fairway though, he’s struggling to really attack pins. He leaves this one a little long of the back pin, just barely sticking to the edge of the green. That’ll be about 20 feet for birdie. You’ve got to assume he’s due for a putt to drop. His reads have been solid, just needs to get the proper pace. Wow. Another great roll but just misses left. Par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 8.

Hole 16 – Par 3

Nice, smooth stroke here for TW finds the green, but like the rest of his round so far it’s a lengthy birdie putt, this time from 35 feet and change. Gave this one a good bit of break but just couldn’t find the bottom of the cup. You’ve heard this one before: two-putt par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 7.

Hole 15 – Par 4

TW flirted with some left fairway bunkers but kept his drive in the short stuff here on No. 15. Other than the minor blemish on No. 13, the Cat looks comfortable today. From 149 yards out Tiger just about flagged in, leaving just outside 10 feet for birdie. This is his best look of the day, great shot. Status quo for the day: two-putt par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 6.

Hole 14 – Par 4

Great swing here from Tiger pushes this ball about 320 yards down the left side of the fairway. Just once I’d like to drive the ball like that. Just once. Front left of the green here for the Cat, leaving a 27-footer for birdie. From this distance, the PGA Tour-average make was 9%, but Tiger was in the 91% who missed. Left a little meat on the bone here but cleans up for par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 5.

Hole 13 – Par 4

Oooooh boy this one went right. Right of right. We’re talking closer to another fairway right. He’s got trees in front and just has to lay this one up. Just took his medicine. And then immediately spit it up. His lay up didn’t get to the fairway, and the third shot from the rough flew the green and finds the rough again. He’ll have about 20-some feet of green to work with to get up-and-down to just save bogey. ALMOST HOLED IT. Cheeky little chip here from Tiger was just perfect, checking up and burning the right edge. First bogey of the day.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 4.

Hole 12 – Par 4

Tiger went 3-wood off the tee on No. 10 so that means this is his first driver of the day at the 12th and it is absolutely nuked down the fairway. He’s on the right side of the fairway with about 220 yards left to the hole, which is nestled on the back of the green. His approach leaked just a little to the right but was good enough to just climb up and hang on to the green. Tour data says 34 feet, another birdie putt awaits. Another really good putt here from Tiger, missing by just a foot or so. Par. This looks easy.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 3.

Hole 11 – Par 3

First par 3 of the day for the Cat, playing just over 200 yards. Tiger flights this one to the middle of the green, about 25 feet from the front-left pin. Useful. This was a good-looking miss, curling right around the back of the cup. Tiger had the break perfectly, just not the speed. Another par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 2.

Hole 10 – Par 4

And we’re off! This one from Tiger starts off right down the middle but fades a bit to the right and rolls into the first cut rough. His approach was right on line but is pretty short of the hole. Either just a club short or the rough was that thick, either way, we’re putting on the first for birdie from about 40 feet. Birdie putt lags close to the hole for a tap-in par. Next.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 1.

Pre-round

Blue shirt. Black pants. The Big Cat looks comfortable warming up before his round.
