Mike Tomlin ‘hated’ how Seahawks-Steelers ended, but not more than under bettors

The only people that may have hated the end of the Steelers-Seahawks game more than Mike Tomlin were those that took the under.

Mike Tomlin was visibly upset on the sideline of Sunday night’s game between the Steelers and Seahawks after it had appeared time expired in regulation with his team on top, only for referees to declare a replay review of the previous play.

The play in question was a catch-and-fumble by Seahawks receiver D.K. Metcalf and whether he actually had possession before putting the ball on the ground. Replay confirmed it was a fumble, but the review gave Seattle three seconds back on the game clock and time to line up for a spike without the typical frenzy of those moments. A 43-yard field goal later, the game was heading into overtime rather than ending in a 20-17 Steelers win.

“I hated it,” Tomlin told reporters after the game. “I can not believe that game was stopped to confirm catch [or] no catch in that moment. That’s all I’ma say.”

Tomlin, however, can always take solace in the fact that his team persevered to get the 23-20 win in overtime. Those who bet the under can do no such thing.

As of Friday, the over/under for this game on Tipico Sportsbook was 42.5. Those who bet the under were probably sitting comfortably up until it was clear Seattle would get one last snap to try for the field goal. And once Jason Myers split the uprights to send the game into OT and bring the total to 40, their only hope was for the game to end with a safety or in a tie.

Instead, Pittsburgh’s Chris Boswell ended it with a field goal of his own, and the over bettors were the ones to come away with a slim victory — and don’t expect them to feel sorry for the losers. If the review hadn’t taken place, over bettors may have had a gripe as well. Before the refs called for a review, Seattle had spiked the ball a first time and seemingly did so with one second left on the clock. But the clock operator ran that extra second anyway, which is why Pittsburgh thought the game was over in the first place. That’s without mentioning this whole mess could’ve been avoided if Metcalf would have just run out of bounds to stop the clock.

“It was an embarrassment,” Tomlin said of the finish.

But hey, at least he still came away with a win. Under bettors probably walked away from the game feeling like they got played.
