The Miami Dolphins introduced new head coach Mike McDaniel to the media on Thursday where he, owner Stephen Ross, and general manager Chris Grier all made speeches.
While taking questions, McDaniel informed the media he plans on doing something he’s helped with but never done on his own: call plays.
“I plan on calling plays myself,” McDaniel said. “But one thing I’ve noticed in my journey is that successful play-callers don’t isolate themselves, they utilize the people around them. That’s what a head coach should do…As an offensive coordinator, you call plays, but if you’re a head coach and your calling plays you better be reliant and feel very good about the people on your offensive staff.”
McDaniel only spent one season as the San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator, and during that time, head coach Kyle Shanahan fulfilled those duties. However, it’s important that Miami’s coach understands how important collaboration is for his staff, as Ross made it clear that was one of the main reasons they moved on from Brian Flores and why they hired McDaniel.
