Mike Keith: ‘There’s a real chance’ Titans sign Jadeveon Clowney

Mike Keith says don’t close the door on the Titans signing Jadeveon Clowney.

Tennessee Titans radio announcer Mike Keith believes “there’s a real chance” the team could still sign Jadeveon Clowney in free agency.

Clowney continues to wait for the right time to sign with one of his suitors, and Titans general manager Jon Robinson continues to make it clear the team is still keeping an eye on the situation.

On NFL Network, Keith made the case that Clowney signing in Nashville makes sense and could still happen with the Titans having about $19.3 million in cap space left.

“Oh, I think there’s a real chance because the Titans have cap room, they certainly have a connection from Mike Vrabel’s time in Houston,” Keith explained. “They have other connections within the team that are reaching out to him — Johnathan Joseph, former teammate from the same hometown, Taylor Lewan reaching out on social media, other players saying they’d love to have him. If you’re Clowney, the Titans certainly make sense if the dollars make sense… but the Titans have clearly left the door open publicly that they have interest in Clowney. Now, will what they want to pay and what he wants to get paid match up?  That I don’t have any idea, but I wouldn’t rule the Titans out in this, no.”

One of the things that could play a huge factor in Clowney choosing the Titans is his connections to the team, as Keith pointed out.

Joseph is a close friend of Clowney’s and a former teammate, and then you have Vrabel, who was his defensive coordinator with the Houston Texans in 2017, the same season Clowney totaled a career-high 9.5 sacks.

While the Titans have already attempted to upgrade their pass-rush with the signing of Vic Beasley, adding Clowney also would really put the Titans’ defense over the top.

Not only does Clowney offer a pass-rush upgrade, he’s also elite against the run, an area where Beasley has struggled in the past, and can drop into coverage when need be.

If the Titans want to take that next step and become a team that can compete for a Super Bowl, Clowney could very well be the answer.
