With training camp only a month away for the New England Patriots, Stephon Gilmore’s status with the team will likely be revealed sooner than later.
Gilmore, 30, is set to make $7 million entering the final year of his contract and he won’t play for that low of a price. He missed the team’s mandatory minicamp, which cost him $93,085, and it was to gain leverage for a restructured contract. ESPN’s Mike Reiss believes Gilmore’s absence from minicamp was a positive for his future with the team, but clearly nothing has transpired yet.
NFL Network’s Mike Giardi joined WEEI’s “The Ken and Curtis Show” on Saturday morning and provided his take on the situation.
“So, I’m thinking he’s not showing up for the beginning of training camp,” Giardi said. “They’re going to be fine with it because they’re going to let it play out, if J.C. (Jackson) can handle it, they’re going to find out J.C. can’t handle it. I’m going to go, let’s say 73 percent he is starting Week 1.”
Thanks to @MikeGiardi for joining us this morning, here’s his answer to @JumboHart’s question, ‘Percent chance that Mac Jones and Stephon Gilmore start Week 1 for the Pats?’ —> pic.twitter.com/scmkxSxQZj

The Patriots would only have Jackon, Jonathan Jones, Joejuan Williams, Jalen Mills and Michael Jackson if Gilmore were to leave. With a team that spent a ton of money in the offseason and that’s looking to quickly bounce back, it’s difficult to believe Gilmore won’t be in the picture.
