Mike Elko is determined to end Texas A&M’s SEC road woes this season

Texas A&M’s SEC road woes will hopefully end, starting with taking on the Florida Gators in Gainsville

One of the worst streaks Texas A&M brought into the 2024 season after hiring new head coach Mike Elko is the SEC road losing streak, returning to a win against Missouri during the 2021 season.

Under former head coach Jimbo Fisher, Texas A&M’s road issues started at the end of the 2021 campaign. They continued during his final season in 2023, as poor coaching, shaky quarterback play, and even more notable, depleted secondaries caused these continuous problems.

However, from 2018 to 2021, Elko was Fisher’s defensive coordinator, and Texas A&M won seven SEC road games, mainly during the memorable 9-1 2020 season. Knowing what it takes to keep composure and prepare to play in raucous environments, Elko noted on Monday that getting back to the “recipe” that worked is key.

We won quite a few of them when I was here. We’ll try to duplicate that recipe more than the last couple of years.”

“It’s challenging playing on the road in this conference. … You’re going to play in a hostile environment, no matter who, no matter where, no matter when.”

No, beating any SEC team on their home field isn’t an easy fix. Still, having a consistent pass rush and great quarterback play will elevate any team, something Texas A&M starting QB Conner Weigman and junior defensive end Nic Scourton need to bring on Saturday against the Gators.

Texas A&M will travel to Gainsville to take on the Florida Gators on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will air on ABC.
