Mike Denbrock encouraging Jayden Daniels to ‘let it rip’

Mike Denbrock expects Jayden Daniels to ‘let it rip’ this fall.

A lot of focus was put on [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag]’ development at LSU this summer.

The veteran quarterback had the best season of his career last year. He was dynamic with his legs and took care of the football.

This fall, the hope is Daniels can take a step forward when it comes the downfield passing game. LSU struggled to create explosive plays through the air last year, which prevented the offense from finding that next level.

At a press conference on Thursday, offensive coordinator [autotag]Mike Denbrock[/autotag] said he expects Daniels to take more of those shots.

Denbrock said Daniels is more comfortable in the offense, both with the playbook and the personnel. That’s led to some added confidence for the fifth-year quarterback.

“He feels he can let it rip a little bit more, and we continue to encourage him to do that more, and more, and more,” Denbrock said.

“He’s taken it upon himself as much as anything to play that way and be aggressive,” Denbrock added.

For the offense as a whole, Denbrock said last year was about the little things, calling it survival mode at times. This year, there’s a better understanding of the scheme across the board, which could lead to more versatility that helps to stress the defense.

Denbrock also continued to discuss the offense’s need to get receivers in more catch-and-run opportunities.

“I thought we caught a lot of footballs with our backs turned to where we were trying to score last year,” Denbrock said.

Denbrock said LSU made some subtle tweaks that will allow the talented receiver room to make plays with the ball in their hand.
