Microsoft says Game Pass is about ‘choice’ rather than cannibalizing sales

The service “offers gamers and game creators more” with regard to how they make purchases.

Earlier this week, Microsoft confirmed that games added to Xbox Game Pass have fewer base sales overall – though the company insists it’s about giving players and developers “another option” to discover and monetize games, respectively.

As reported by Eurogamer, Microsoft expanded on its data showing that Xbox Game Pass additions tend to sell less – but there are other means of generating revenue.

“Xbox Game Pass offers gamers and game creators more choice and opportunity in how they discover, experience, and deliver games,” reads the statement. “For gamers, that means providing another option for them to discover games and play with friends at a great value. For developers, that means creating another option for how they monetize their games.”

“We’re focused on helping game creators of all sizes maximize the total financial value they receive through Game Pass,” it continues, “Each game is unique, so we work closely with creators to build a custom program to reflect what they need, ensure they are compensated financially for their participation in the service, and allow room for creativity and innovation. As a result, the number of developers interested in working with Game Pass continues to grow.”

Every month, Xbox Game Pass sees new titles – February 2023’s update bought Madden NFL 23, Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord, and more.
