Michigan running back Donovan Edwards listed as one of the most explosive players in college football

Donovan Edwards came to Michigan as a five-star recruit and arguably the nation’s best running back coming out of high school. The West Bloomfield product chose to stay at Michigan instead of attending Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, or any other school you could possibly think of — they were all wanting Edwards.

Entering his junior year of college, Edwards is poised for a gigantic season, even as the No. 2 running back on the depth chart. He would more than likely be the starter on any college team in the country except for the Wolverines since the maize and blue do return Heisman contender, Blake Corum.

Once Corum went down last season against Illinois, Edwards showed off why he was an elite five-star coming out of high school. The then-sophomore starred for Michigan during the final three games of the season against Ohio State, Purdue, and TCU. He ran for 520 yards and three touchdowns as the lead back for the Wolverines during that stretch.

247Sports created a top 10 list of the most explosive players in college football entering the 2023 season. Edwards came in ranked at No. 7 on the list. He came in front of Iowa’s Cooper DeJean and right behind Penn State‘s Nicholas Singleton.

Donovan Edwards would be an elite starter on most teams but splits reps last season with a Heisman candidate in Michigan’s backfield–– Blake Corum. Still, he came up just nine yards short of a 1,000-yard season in 2022 and posted 7.1 yards per carry, good for third-most both in program history and among college football running backs last season. No performance better encapsulated Edwards’ big-play ability than his 216-yard outing against Ohio State in which he broke off touchdown runs of 75 and 85 yards. He is also a capable receiver with 465 yards and three scores for his career.
