The Wolverines didn’t make the cut for one of their top targets in 2021.

Michigan has been persistent about one of its top priorities in 2021, and it seems to not have paid off in the time being.

The Wolverines, with offensive coordinator Josh Gattis taking the lead, have been hard after 2021 Alexandria (VA) St. Stephens & St. Agnes four-star wide receiver Malcolm Johnson Jr., who is among the fastest players in the country and a track star in addition to his adept ability on the gridiron.

Johnson got his offer from the maize and blue nearly a year ago and visited in October for the Notre Dame game. However, when he dropped a top 12 on Sunday, Michigan didn’t make the cut, but Ole Miss, Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina, Auburn, LSU, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Georiga and Texas did.

Johnson does note that his recruitment is still open, but still, it’s not a great sign for the Wolverines, especially considering that he told WolverinesWire how hard Michigan has been after him last month.

“I feel they definitely have made me feel like a priority,” Johnson said. “The coaches have really been doing a great job of recruiting. So that’s one job they’ve really done a great job in.

“(With Gattis), I feel like it’s a great relationship in that it’s only gonna get better. He’s really been in my corner.”

There’s still plenty of time for the maize and blue to get on the right side of things with Johnson. But the situation as of right now will require some work.
