College football has been on hold due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, and that includes hosting recruits in person on campus.
But one outgoing Michigan player has chosen his school of choice in the middle of all of this.
On March 10, former Wolverines linebacker Devin Gil announced that he would not be returning to Ann Arbor and just over a month later, we now know his destination. The South Florida native has made the decision to return to the namesake, announcing on Twitter on Tuesday that he’s committing to the University of South Florida in Tampa.
He will be immediately eligible and have one season left at the NCAA level.

Gil spent most of his time in Ann Arbor on special teams or in a reserve role at weak-side linebacker, but split the starting WILL job with Josh Ross in 2018. However, he was supplanted in 2019 by former walk-on Jordan Glasgow, who came on strong during the offseason. Gil’s reserve role was also decimated in the process, as he saw little time on the defensive side of the ball, but remained on special teams.
He isn’t the only former Michigan player to end up with the Bulls. Wide receiver Eddie McDoom left the program after the 2017 season and transferred to USF — near his hometown. Conversely, Michigan hired linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary, who was South Florida’s defensive coordinator under Charlie Strong the past few seasons.
