The suspension of Jim Harbaugh sent mixed emotions through the Michigan fanbase. Most were enraged by the decision. The fact that it came from within the university seemed like an insult to the trust between Harbaugh and the administration. On the other side stand the believers that think a preemptive strike will limit a more severe punishment from the NCAA down the line.
Regardless, Michigan will be grateful to have Harbaugh back on the sideline to open conference play.
The Wolverines survived a weak out-of-conference slate behind a number of inspiring performances from future FBS head coaches, but the lack of experience was clear at times. There were occasional playcall issues, subsitutional confusion, and zero headsets spiked onto the ground. Mike Hart, Sherrone Moore, and others did a great job, but there’s nothing quite like ‘Khaki Jim.’
Michigan plays its fourth consecutive home game this Saturday when the Rutgers Scarlet Knights come to town. On paper, this should not be close, but Rutgers has given Michigan issues recently. The matchups in both 2020 and 2021 were decided by one score, and last year’s affair had a similar feel to Saturday’s Bowling Green debacle. The program is buzzing, though. Players, staffers, and fans alike are eagerly awaiting the season debut of their head coach.
The key for Michigan staying in control of this game will be to put the noise aside. Forget the tribute plays, funky formations, and goal-line shenanigans, just win the game. The home crowd will be louder than usual for a Rutgers game, but be sure to put the game out of reach early. The best-case scenario for Michigan is a methodical game that ends with a couple of backup quarterbacks taking snaps. Regardless, the Wolverines should be back to Har-balling in no time.
