If you’re Michigan football and you’re running dangerously low on tall, possession-type receivers, and there’s one in your backyard rated a four-star, you go after him.
As of spring 2021, the Wolverines have but four wideouts standing at 6-foot-2 or taller, with two being early-enrollee freshmen, another being a walk-on and the other being veteran Cornelius Johnson, who stands at 6-foot-3. But the maize and blue had long been known for the tall receivers who could break the game open. Most recently, Nico Collins held that role, but as Michigan recruits more speedy types nowadays, not as many have ended up in Ann Arbor.
Look no further now to Eastpointe (MI) East Detroit four-star wide receiver Tay’shawn Trent, the 6-foot-4, 205-pound wideout with offers from Michigan State, Indiana, Kentucky, Penn State, Louisville, Pitt and West Virginia. Trent ended his process on Wednesday, having given his verbal commitment to the Wolverines.

Trent is rated the No. 281 prospect in 2022 according to the 247Sports Composite. Rivals.com sees him as the nation’s No. 33 receiver and the fifth-best player in the state of Michigan.
With Trent in the fold, the Wolverines now have seven pledges in the 2022 class, and he’s the first wideout after the maize and blue took three in 2021. His commitment moves Michigan football up from No. 11 in the 247Sports team rankings to No. 9, leapfrogging over Oklahoma State and Florida State.
