Michigan football retains 2021 commit over Miami

Instead of going to Miami, the three-star corner stayed with Michigan football.

It seemed that Michigan was about to lose out on a coveted defensive duo out of Fort Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas.

While the status of linebacker Jaydon Hood was clarified, and that he would sign with Michigan football after all, not long after it appeared he would wait until national signing day in February, it was a big unknown what his cornerback teammate Ja’Den McBurrows would do.

McBurrows is Michigan’s only committed corner in the 2021 class and one with an incredible offer list, as well. He had opportunities from Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State, and Penn State, but it was in-state Miami that was giving him pause. It seemed all but certain that he would flip to the Hurricanes, but as early signing day progressed, that seemed less certain.

On Instagram Live, McBurrows announced that he would be remaining in the Wolverines class, signing with Michigan football after all.

McBurrows is a three-star and the No. 549 player in the country overall, according to the 247Sports Composite. Per Andrew Ivins, he compares favorably to Miami’s Trajan Bandy and is likely to be a Power Five starter.

Not the biggest defender. Plays much bigger, however, than his size and frame suggests with a brash, competitive attitude. Intelligent defender that will sniff out screens and quick throws. Understands how to use leverage to his advantage. Excellent click-and-close drive quickness. Doesn’t lack footspeed, either. Always looking to make plays when the ball is in the air and will fight through hands of receivers. Physical striker with above average toughness that can support against the run. Produced as a junior at one of the nation’s top high school programs totaling six interceptions and 15 pass break ups. Followed that up with two pick-sixes as a senior. Might lack the desired height for the position, but should be able to make an impact at the Power 5 level and could carve out role early on in nickel packages.

With McBurrows and Hood in the fold, Michigan football will have signed the entire expected class, save for the two flips from earlier.
