Michigan football quick film hits: Michigan State

Michigan football defeated Michigan State 44-10 in the battle for the Paul Bunyan trophy. When rewatching what was noticed in the win?

DEFENSE

  • The unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on defensive end Aidan Hutchinson was questionable as he was pushing and shoving MSU players like they were pushing and shoving him. Unless he said something he shouldn’t have, if they were going to penalize him, flags should have gone both ways.
  • Linebacker Khaleke Hudson was lucky he wasn’t called for a hit out of bounds against MSU wide receiver Cody White in the second quarter as White and another MSU player were called for unsportsmanlike conduct on the play to push MSU back.
  • Safety Brad Hawkins was close to getting an interception late in the second quarter as that would’ve been a huge change in momentum as Michigan could have possibly scored a touchdown before halftime instead of a field goal.
  • The punt block by Hudson was huge in momentum as Michigan was already up by 17 to start the fourth quarter, but MSU was still putting up a fight. That punt block opened the gates for Michigan to put up 17 more points in the final quarter to make it 44-10 in the end.
  • When cornerback Lavert Hill intercepted MSU quarterback Brian Lewerke, he could have possibly returned it for a touchdown. He stiff-armed White out of bounds and just needed to turn upfield for the score. Instead, he celebrated the stiff arm and stepped out of bounds. He might regret not taking that back to the house to put up even more points on the Spartans as the Wolverines only got three points on the drive off the turnover.
