Miami Dolphins host a slew of free agents head of roster cuts

The Miami Dolphins had a busy evening on Friday as the team looked to whittle down their roster to the required cutoff of 53 players by today at 4PM EST. But while the first waves of cuts have become known, the Dolphins may have even more cuts to make if the team decides to welcome some of yesterday’s tryouts onto the active roster. The Dolphins hosted a slew of free agents yesterday in what might be another potential big shakeup for the 2020 active roster, which we’ll know by shortly after 4PM this afternoon.

The most notable visitations for the Dolphins include WR Antonio Callaway, a speedy wide receiver who was drafted in the 4th-round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. His rookie season in Cleveland produced nearly 600 yards receiving and 5 scores but a failed drug test contributed to him being cut from the Browns in 2019. Callaway clocked in a 4.41s 40-yard dash at the 2018 NFL Combine, he’d provide Miami with another speedy component on the outside if the team did indeed decide to sign the troubled receiver.

A pair of Auburn rookies were also invited to the facility in DE Nick Coe and DB Javaris Davis. Both players have been to Miami’s facility at least once before — Coe visited with the team in August as a free agent and Davis was actually claimed off the waiver wire before being cut in early August. Both players were a part of Miami’s in-depth Pro Day visit with the Auburn program this spring.

Quarterback Jake Rudock was also in the mix, he feels like an obvious practice squad signing for the Dolphins now that the team’s intentions to release QB Josh Rosen have been reported.

There are no guarantees any of these players will get the call for Miami’s active roster. But the expanded practice squad dynamics this year will make it possible to call up practice squad players on any given week of the season — so that may be the best path for any of these players to get on the field if Miami has room for them on the unit.
