El Tri begins Copa America preparations with a friendly in Chicago

Mexico will officially begin its preparations for the Copa América on Friday when it faces Bolivia in a friendly at Soldier Field in Chicago.

El Tri is looking to turn things around after a difficult spell that has seen it clearly fall behind the United States in the race for Concacaf supremacy.

Mexico’s most recent match was the Nations League final in March, which saw the team fall 2-0 to the U.S. in another disappointing display against its biggest rival.

Mexico will look to turn things around in the Copa América, where it’s been drawn into Group B alongside Ecuador, Venezuela and Jamaica.

In response to a downturn in fortunes, Mexico head coach Jaime Lozano omitted some veterans from his Copa América preliminary roster, including Guillermo Ochoa, Hirving Lozano, Jesús Gallardo, Henry Martín and Raúl Jiménez.

This match will be the first of three pre-Copa friendlies for Mexico, which will also face Uruguay and Brazil in early June ahead of the tournament kickoff later in the month.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the match.
