After months of rumor and speculation, Meta finally announced the Meta Quest 3 VR headset and price point alongside a few more details. Most of the set’s specs are still under wrap and will be until Meta’s Connect conference on Sep. 27, 2023, but the company did tease a bit about what to expect in a new blog post.
The Meta Quest 3 still doesn’t have a release date, but when it does launch, the 128GB set will cost $499 – just slightly less than the PSVR 2. Meta said a second option is also planned, but didn’t say how much storage it will have or what the expected price point is. The Quest 3 is 40 percent slimmer than the Quest 2, with “streamlined, ergonomic” controllers, and advanced touch haptics.
The set features a next-generation Snapdragon chip that will reportedly deliver “twice the graphical performance” of the chip in the Quest 2 set, with better details and smoother performance in general.
Advanced Passthrough technology and improved spatial understanding are meant to make interacting with the real and virtual worlds together seamless, and Meta says the goal is creating opportunities for more immersive experiences – playing a virtual boardgame on your real-life table, for example, or using virtual decorations in your real living room.
Presumably, we’ll see other, more varied experiences as well, such as watching sports events through your VR set.
Quest 3 will also support the entire Quest 2 library of games. Speaking of Quest 2, Meta is dropping that set’s price – $299 for the 128GB set and $349 for the 256GB set. Quest 2 and Quest 2 Pro are also getting a performance upgrade, with Meta promising up to 26 percent better performance for the CPU. The Quest 2’s GPU will improve by up to 19 percent and the Quest Pro by up to 11 percent.
