A Husker tradition at Memorial Stadium will not occur during the 2022 season. Nebraska Athletic Director Trev Alberts says fans will not be releasing red balloons from the stands after the first home touchdown in each game this year. He cited a helium shortage as the reason for the cancelation heading into the season.
Various environmental groups have criticized the school in the past. While the school has had conversations about the impact of the balloon release, the helium shortage is the primary purpose of the cancelation. Alberts stated that any helium that the university acquires would be used only for medical purposes.
