Jets first-round pick Mekhi Becton is beginning to familiarize himself with his teammates.
While Becton has been able to see his teammates’ faces during virtual meetings, he has yet to meet any of them in person due to the ongoing pandemic. This prompted Becton to text two of the players he’ll be blocking for in 2020 — Sam Darnold and Le’Veon Bell.
Becton has been unable to speak with his quarterback over the phone, but the two have exchanged text messages. With the current restrictions put in place, the two will be forced to formulate a relationship via technology. Even before getting on the field, it’s imperative that Darnold builds a rapport with his blind-side protector.
“Me and Sam actually texted each other the other day,” Becton told reporters during a video conference call on Monday. “I’m going to try to find a way to form a relationship between us sooner or later.”
Becton also texted Bell with a similar sentiment. There’s hope that with Becton manning the left side, he will have an immediate impact as a run-blocker in front of Bell, who is coming off the worst statistical season of his career.
“Pretty much the same as Sam Darnold,” Becton said of his texts with Bell. “I’m just going to try to get to know both those guys.”
Becton is devoted to getting to know his veteran teammates and by doing so, the rookie out of Louisville is setting himself up for success in a challenging offseason.
