Matthew Wolff was so good Friday morning that even Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson took notice. And the eight-time Pro Bowler wasn’t the only one awestruck.
The 21-year-old Wolff shot an 8-under 64 in his second round to move to 11-under and tie for the lead at the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club. Starting on the 10th tee, he completed a 30 on the back nine, then shot 34 on the front nine.
He had six consecutive birdies — Nos. 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 1 — while also birdieing Nos. 10, 3 and 6 getting to 9 under for his round with three holes to play. His only bogey came on No. 8, his second-to-last hole, where he missed a putt and dropped a stroke.
“I just felt like I wasn’t really worrying about the cut at that point,” Wolff said. “I was worrying about putting myself in the best spot and making more birdies. When you’re feeling that good, you’re not worried about missing shots.”

The current projected cut is 4 under.
“As I’ve learned the last couple of weeks, you definitely can’t win on the first two days,” Wolff said, “but you can sure as heck lose.”
He walked off the course tied for the lead with Bryson DeChambeau, Seamus Power and Mark Hubbard, with more players teeing off in the afternoon.
From Jupiter, Florida, Wolff has one career PGA Tour victory from a 21-under 263 at the 2019 3M Open in Minnesota. He went to college at Oklahoma State before turning professional in June 2019.
Since golf’s restart three weeks ago, Wolff finished in 54th place at the Charles Schwab Challenge but missed the cut at the RBC Heritage and Travelers Championship.
In 13 events this season, he owns four finishes within the top 25 and tied for 11th at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January.
