After Tuesday’s practice inside Lambeau Field, Green Bay Packers quarterback Matt LaFleur challenged rookie quarterback Jordan Love to start “letting it rip” during 11-on-11 work.
The Packers’ first-round pick must have embraced the challenge.
LaFleur said Love was “much better” during Friday’s practice inside the Don Hutson Center.
“I thought today he was much better. He was more aggressive. I thought he was more decisive. That’s what we want to continue to see,” LaFleur said.
Incremental improvement is all the Packers can expect from their rookie passer.
Love, the 26th overall pick, didn’t get a traditional offseason and faced a near-impossible challenge to start his first NFL training camp. Offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett said he’s “not 100 percent sure at times,” a reasonable reality for a first-year quarterback in a new, complicated offense – without or without an offseason workout program.
LaFleur said they tell their quarterbacks: “Indecisive equals ineffective.”
As Love gets more comfortable, LaFleur is confident the indecisiveness will fade and the effectiveness will show.
The path ahead for Love might be long, but Friday’s practice was a step in the right direction.
“From a footwork and mechanics standpoint, he’s continuing to impress and get better each and every day. We just have to slow it down mentally for him because there is a lot of information. It’s not like we’re holding back the playbook. We’re throwing everything at him and there is a lot to digest. As he gets more comfortable, it’ll show in his play,” LaFleur said.
