The Tom Brady vs. Bill Belichick debate has went on for decades and the argument will likely never die out — unless Brady wins another Super Bowl or two.
Many will argue that Belichick constructed the early teams and put Brady into position for title victories — while others will explain how the quarterback has been the reason for the New England Patriots’ sustained success for 20 years. The 2020 season was the first time where the Hall of Famers weren’t on the same team and obviously Brady made the best of his situation.
One person who believes Brady is the outright winner in this debate is actor Matt Damon. Damon, while joining “The Bill Simmons Podcast”, explained his reason for choosing the 43-year-old.
“It’s not even bandwagon. I love Tom,” Damon said, via WEEI. “He’s a once-in-a-lifetime athlete for all of us who were lucky enough to be able to follow. His entire career, I’m riding it all the way to the end.
“I don’t, you know, the Patriots, I don’t know. I’m following Tommy. The fact he did that last yer on a torn MCL, just stop it. You know what I mean? It’s just awesome. It’s such a great story.”
Damon has always been a Brady fan and he’s kept a tight relationship with him over the years.
“I was always a believer,” Damon said. “Everyone does the ‘Was it Belichick or was it Brady?’ Belichick’s an amazing coach, but I never doubted that it wasn’t Brady. … He’s on the field playing the game.”
Damon said he watched every Tampa Bay Buccaneers game last year and that he will continue to this season. He also is staying up with the Patriots and gave credit to Cam Newton and Mac Jones. But, he felt as if Brady should still be the team’s signal-caller.
“They could’ve kept him,” he said. “I don’t begrudge that guy. I want him to go win another Super Bowl. It’s just such an awesome story.”
