Maryland at Illinois: Three things to know
- The Terrapins pulled off a two-game sweep against the Illini last season. In the game at UI (Feb. 7), Maryland won 75-66 despite being a minus-10 in the rebounding margin. The Terps held Illinois to a 36.1% mark from the floor. The victory was part of a nine-game win streak for Maryland.
- Illinois has been held to a lower field-goal mark than that 36.1% just once in 20 games since Feb. 7. The 2020-21 Illini own a 59% effective field-goal mark, a figure which ranks fifth in NCAA-I. Illinois ranks 17th in the nation in scoring at 85.0 points per game.
- UI is led by the two-headed, inside-outside combination of G Ayo Dosunmu and C Kofi Cockburn. Dosunmu heads into Sunday night’s game averaging 22.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game. Cockburn is averaging 17.0 PPG and 10.1 RPG. Dosunmu had back-to-back 30-point games Dec. 23 and 26, and he has had three such games this season.

The Fighting Illini are the more talented team. They’re on a nice roll, and the ML price here (an 83.33% implied win probability) does offer a bit of value.

Against the spread (ATS)
Illinois went 2-3 from Dec. 2-20. Since then, the Illini are 4-0 straight up and 3-0-1 ATS. Two of those covers had 12-plus margins to spare. Over its last six games at home, Illinois is 6-0 with an average score of 87.2 to 59.3.
A slower tempo and more reliance on 3-pointers of late, makes this ATS play a bit riskier, but ILLINOIS -9.5 (-110) is still the lean.
Over/Under (O/U)
These two teams are at opposite ends of the pace/tempo spectrum. Illinois plays games with a lot of possessions; Maryland toils in more plodding affairs. In fact, recently the Illini have slowed things down a bit, working the ball more and setting up more 3-point attempts.
The market hasn’t caught up: The last three UI games have hit the Under but on mixed signals, a PASS is recommended.
