Just a week ago, there were questions surrounding the Dallas Mavericks’ future — if they want to build a title contender around Luke Doncic, could they do it if Kristaps Porzingis and his contract were a problem?
Now, in an offseason in which they may give Doncic a huge contract, they could be facing problems within the front office and the superstar forward.
Per The Athletic, Doncic may end up with his supermax contract, but his relationship with the brass is a concern.
“Much of the trepidation surrounding Doncic wanting to remain in Dallas long-term stems from the current state of the Mavericks’ front office and its distribution of power,” wrote Tim Cato and Sam Amick. “Haralabos Voulgaris, the Mavericks’ director of quantitative research and development, has been the most influential voice in the front office since being hired in 2018, sources tell The Athletic.”
A team source also told them that owner Mark Cuban listens to himself, and No. 2 is Voulgaris. There was a reported incident in which Doncic “snapped back at a Voulgaris courtside reaction” in February.
Cuban’s response on Twitter contained just two words, one of which was an expletive:
There you go. If the Mavs can overcome this drama and keep Doncic happy, the future is bright. Otherwise? They could risk losing one of the best young superstars in the game.
