Mario Kart 9 is reportedly in the works at Nintendo

Blue shells are potentially inbound.

It’s been years since Mario Kart 8 Deluxe  came out, and one games industry insider claims a sequel is in development at Nintendo.

In a story by GamesIndustry.biz, Dr. Serkan Toto of Kantan Games made several bold predictions about what we might see from video games in 2022. Of all his talking points, one regarding the return of a certain kart-racing series is particularly grin-inducing.

“I am aware Mario Kart 8 Deluxe  is still selling very well on the Nintendo Switch,” Toto said. “But Mario Kart 9  is in active development (and comes with a new twist) and Nintendo could tease it this year.”

He’s not kidding about Mario Kart 8 Deluxe  selling well either, as it’s currently  the highest-selling game  on the Nintendo Switch. That astronomical success has led many to believe that a sequel won’t happen for a long time. After all, Nintendo probably doesn’t want to kill a golden goose just yet.

However, the bottom line is that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe  is old, despite being one of the Switch’s best games. Originally, it came out on the Nintendo Wii U in 2014, then Nintendo made a suped-up port for the Switch in 2017. So it’s high time a sequel made its debut.

As is always the case with predictions and rumors, don’t take this as a confirmation that Mario Kart 9  is happening in 2022.
