Mario Kart 8 Deluxe just sped past Mario Kart Wii in sales, becoming the bestselling entry in the long-running series.
Nintendo released the financial results for its second quarter on Thursday and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe seems to be trucking along just fine. Selling another 3.34 million copies in the first quarter of this year, bringing its lifetime sales to 38.74 million! Just think of all those blue shell victims. It’s terrifying.
Those are particularly staggering figures when you remember that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a port of a Wii U game that came out back in 2014. When the Switch launched in 2017, Nintendo re-released the game with its DLC, some new tracks and a battle mode. That decision sure paid off, right?
Here are some key software milestones for Nintendo this quarter:
– Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has become the best selling Mario Kart of all time (38.74m), surpassing Mario Kart Wii (37.38m).
– Skyward Sword HD has sold in 3.6m units in 77 days. The original sold 3.67m LTD on Wii. pic.twitter.com/XrvejDiTKs

The Nintendo Switch might not be as powerful as the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, but that hasn’t stopped the five-year-old console from still selling like hotcakes. The global semiconductor shortages are slowing Nintendo’s production of them right now, though. That and there are just so many excellent-looking games like Splatoon 3 and Kirby and the Forgotten Land still to come.
