At some point during Saturday’s humbling 4-0 defeat to Brighton, Manchester United fans leveled one of the harshest chants available in the supporter canon at their players.
“You’re not fit to wear the shirt!”
When asked about that chant after the game, all United star Bruno Fernandes could do was sheepishly agree.
“I include myself in that. What we did today, what I did today, was not enough to be in a Manchester United shirt and I accept it,” Fernandes told Sky Sports after the game.
A club of Man Utd’s stature should, at the bare minimum, be qualifying for the Champions League every season. But Saturday’s defeat to the Seagulls meant that for the second time in four seasons, United will finish outside the top four and miss Europe’s top club competition.
But it gets worse.
United hits several Premier League lows
The stats for United’s 2021-22 campaign are getting uglier by the week. Chief among them were two Premier League records the club set after defeat to Brighton.
With 56 goals allowed, United has now conceded the most goals of any season in its Premier League history, dating back to 1992-93.
United is now also guaranteed to finish with its lowest point total in Premier League history. With one game remaining the club has 58 points, six short of the 64 that the Red Devils earned under David Moyes in 2013-14.

United is currently sitting in sixth place, the final Europa League qualification position. But West Ham is just three points back in seventh place, has a game in hand and a superior goal difference. Should the Hammers finish ahead of United, then the Red Devils would take part in the Europa Conference League next season.
Let’s all wish incoming head coach Erik ten Hag good luck!
