Mac Jones has drawn criticism for playing it safe in the New England Patriots offense. It’s a tricky situation for the young quarterback, who is set up in an offense built to make him comfortable, with a strong rushing attack. The idea is that Jones doesn’t need to be aggressive. The Patriots want Jones to highlight the strengths of his supporting cast while he’s still developing.
So it was fitting to see where Jones landed in the “Gunslinger Index” from The Athletic’s Ben Baldwin. He makes charts using advanced statistics. This one weighed quarterbacks’ rate of throwing turnover worth plays with their big-time throw percentage (a throw that’s on the higher end of difficulty and value). Jones is right near the middle of the chart (in the second tweet below — not the first one), making him fall in the “good” category.
But there’s something hilariously perfect about Jones straddling the line between “good” and “boring.” That’s about as apt of a description of his rookie season as you can get.

Jones has completed 69.0% of his passes for 3,168 yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He has been a key cog — though certainly the key cog — in New England’s 9-5 season.
