Lucas Zelarayán sure can kick that soccer ball.
The Columbus Crew No. 10 has been one of MLS’s best dead ball experts from the moment he arrived in the league, but he may have outdone himself in his side’s 2-2 road draw with Charlotte FC Wednesday night.
Zelarayán was hauled down at midfield, giving Columbus a free kick barely three steps into the home side’s half. There was no reason to suspect any danger as Zelarayán stood over the ball. He didn’t take the free kick quickly, and the Charlotte back four was focused and well-placed to cope with any long service towards the box.
However, like we said, Zelarayán kicks the ball so well. He can really boot that thing. And so, with Charlotte goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina stepping off his line expecting a long service towards Derrick Etienne Jr., Zelarayán produced a shot worthy of any YouTube trick shot compilation.
With plenty of backspin, Zelarayán’s shot gently soared over Kahlina and into the far corner, giving the Crew a shocking 1-0 lead.
MLS later announced that the goal came from 56.1 yards out, making it the longest direct free kick goal in the league’s history.
Columbus would just barely hang on for the draw, squandering points in stoppage time but still doing enough to eliminate Charlotte, who were facing a must-win situation entering the night.
