LSU women’s basketball beats Washington in final-second thriller

LSU women’s basketball squeaked past Washington in the final seconds

LSU’s Kailyn Gilbert dove for the ball then drove to hoop. Her shot rolled around then finally fell in as the clock ticked under a second.

It proved to be the difference as LSU defeated Washington 68-67, its first game for the Baha Mar Hoops Pink Flamingo Championship in Nassau, Bahamas.

When asked about her game-winner postgame, Gilbert said she took a quick look at the clock as she picked up a loose ball and knew she had enough time to get a shot off.

Flau’Jae Johnson and Aneesa Morrow each finished with 19 points while Sa’Myah Smith chipped in 16 points. Morrow and Smith both finished with double-doubles as they pulled down 13 and 15 rebounds, respectively.

Washington led by 10 points at the break and the end of the third quarter. The Huskies forced 13 turnovers and shot 44.1% from the field. Sayvia Sellers led all scorers with 24 points.

Points off of turnovers were nearly even but the Tigers kept the game close on the boards, scoring 26 second chance points and leading in rebounds by 12.

No. 7 LSU moved to 8-0 on the year. It was the Tigers’ second come from behind victory on the year after LSU faced a deficit in its win over Murray State too.

LSU’s second game of the series in the Bahamas is set for Wednesday at 12:30 PM CT against No. 20 NC State.
