The LSU softball team found itself in real danger for the first time this season on Friday afternoon against Northwestern in the Clearwater Invitational.
It fell in an early 5-0 hole in the second inning but rallied back multiple times en route to a 13-12 win thanks to a walk-off sac-fly from [autotag]Raeleen Gutierrez[/autotag] as the Tigers moved to 7-0 to begin the season.
LSU responded well to the initial deficit, and by the fourth inning, it had taken a 7-5 lead. But the Wildcats wouldn’t go away. They put up a five-spot in the top of the sixth inning, and suddenly, LSU found itself down 12-8 with just six outs left.
It answered in the bottom of the frame, however, in the form of an [autotag]Ali Newland[/autotag] grand slam that tied the game up. With the game still knotted at the bottom of the seventh, a double from [autotag]Danieca Coffey[/autotag] and subsequent groundout put her at third and allowed Gutierrez to end the game with a deep hit to left field.
The undefeated Tigers’ record will be put to the test on Saturday with a pair of very tricky games against No. 6 Oklahoma State and No. 5 Washington.
