While no single metric is the end-all, be-all predictor of college football success, there’s one that seems to reign supreme in terms of projecting future winners: blue-chip ratio.
It’s as simple as it sounds — what percentage of a team’s roster were four and five-star recruits coming out of high school? While elite recruits often bust and underrated players become college stars, the statistics clearly show a high blue-chip ratio connects previous national champions.
No team since at least 2011 has won a national title without having at least a 52% blue-chip ratio, according to CBS Sports’ Bud Elliott. And based on this year’s numbers, LSU is clearly a title contender.
The Tigers rank eighth in 2024 blue-chip ratio, with 70% of the roster having been four or five-star recruits. That’s actually even higher than LSU’s 2019 blue-chip ratio when it won the national title at 54%.
While the transfer portal has given the Tigers some woes (despite clear successes like [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag]) high school recruiting has been a strength for [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag]. And with a top-five class at the moment in 2025, that doesn’t seem likely to change any time soon.
