The Tigers began the 2023 campaign ranked in the top five and viewed as a potential College Football Playoff contender. Though the team won 10 games for the second year in a row, it ultimately proved to be a disappointing campaign.
LSU has retooled the roster quite a bit this offseason with a lot of production moving on. Still, the expectation is not for this program to take a step back in 2024. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.
Earlier during fall camp, left tackle [autotag]Will Campbell[/autotag] said that winning 10 games isn’t good enough anymore. On Monday, new starting quarterback [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] reiterated that mindset.
“We’ve been talking about it since spring,” Nussmeier said. “We all know that the expectation has been raised. We all know the bar’s been raised. We all know that we’re not okay with just winning 10 wins. I’ve said that before and Will (Campbell) said it the other day.”
“Like I’ve said plenty of times, it’s not a result-based thought process. It’s an expectation of how we play and to go about our daily processes. It’s about how we want to act in the meeting room during fall camp, how we want to process what happened on the field, and how can we transfer it over to the next day on the field. It’s how we attack each practice, each rep, each set. So, that’s kind of been our mindset,” Nussmeier said. “Focusing on the now but the expectation definitely has been raised.”
Nussmeier will lead an offense that is expected to remain explosive in 2024, and he also spoke on the improvements the defense has made this offseason. Only time will tell if all the pieces come together, but it’s clear the status quo is no longer good enough for this LSU program.
