The game was moved to New Orleans from Houston after the affects of Hurricane Harvey hit the city of Houston.

Entering the game, LSU was ranked No. 13 in the preseason polls after an 8-4 finish to the 2016 season.

This marked the first full season for the Tigers under new head coach Ed Orgeron.

Tigers running back Derrius Guice rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns in the game as the Tigers defeated the Cougars 27-0.

Quarterback Danny Etling finished 14-of-17 passing for 171 yards and wide receiver D.J. Chark hauled in four receptions for 77 yards.

Though Guice was the star of the game, the Tigers’ defense held BYU to just 97 total yards of offense. LSU amounted for 479 yards of offense and 26 first downs.

The Tigers had possession for 41 minutes and 54 seconds. BYU could get nothing going on offense due to the elite Tigers defense swarming in for tackles on every play.

LSU led 14-0 at halftime, and scored both touchdowns in the second quarter. The Tigers then scored six points in the third and seven in the fourth quarter to finish off the 27-0 shutout victory.

Following the opening season win, LSU would finish the 2017 season with a 9-4 record. The losses came at Mississippi State, at home on homecoming against Troy, at Alabama and in the Citrus Bowl against Notre Dame.

BYU would finish their 2017 season with a record of 4-9. Following the loss to LSU, the Cougars lost five straight games to start out with a 1-6 record.
